The AFI 2007 Project

Ok most of us have used IMDB. Have watched many movies listed in the top 250 and have mixed opinions about it. But many might not have heard of the AFI top 100 list. AFI or The American Film Institute was created as an arts organization to preserve the American film heritage with hands on experience mentored by renowned artists and film makers. The AFI came out with various lists of movies between 1997 to 2007, selected by jurors based on cultural impact and significance among various other factors.

The major factors that the jurors were asked to take into consideration included:
  1. Feature length: Narrative format typically over 60 minutes long
  2. American film: English language, with significant creative and/or financial production from the United States
  3. Critical Recognition: Formal commendation in print, television, and digital media
  4. Major Award Winner: Recognition from competitive events including awards from peer groups, critics, guilds, and major film festivals
  5. Popularity Over Time: Includes success at the box office, television and cable airings, and DVD/VHS sales and rentals
  6. Historical Significance: A film's mark on the history of the moving image through visionary narrative devices, technical innovation or other groundbreaking achievements
  7. Cultural Impact: A film's mark on American society in matters of style and substance
